Prof. Arkadiusz Wójs, the rector of Wrocław University of Science and Technology, has a longstanding association with the university, dating back to his studies, which he completed at the Faculty of Fundamental Technological Problems in 1995. Over the years, he has achieved significant milestones in his academic career. He obtained his doctorate in 1997, followed by his habilitation in 2002 and professorship in 2009. Prof. Wójs has a rich international research background, having been a guest researcher at esteemed institutions such as the National Research Council of Canada, the University of Tennessee, and the University of Cambridge.
Between 2015 and 2020, Prof. Wójs served as the dean of the Faculty of Fundamental Problems of Technology at Wrocław University of Science and Technology. During this period, he held various leadership roles, including Head of the Department of Theoretical Physics and Chairman of the Discipline Council and Degree Committee in the discipline of Physical Sciences. Beyond his responsibilities at Wrocław Tech, Prof. Wójs is actively involved in several scientific organizations. He is a member of the Physics Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences, the Scientific Council of the Institute of Low Temperatures and Structural Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences, the Scientific Council of the Centre for Theoretical Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences, the Wrocław Scientific Society, and the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics. Additionally, he serves as the Academic Director of the Wrocław Knowledge Hub of Academia Europaea. In 2021, he was awarded the title of General Mining Director II.
Prof. Wójs’ research focuses on theoretical and computational physics of condensed matter. He has co-authored six books (including Quantum Dots, Springer-Verlag 1998 – 1400 citations in the Scopus database, Quantum Hall Systems, Oxford University Press 2003) and 187 papers indexed in Scopus, cited 2750 times by other authors (Hirsch index 32). He has given 50 invited lectures at international scientific conferences. He is the supervisor of nine completed and two initiated doctoral dissertations. Prof. Wójs has led national and European research projects, including the NCN Maestro project from 2015 to 2020.
In addition to his academic accolades, Prof. Wójs has received prestigious awards such as the American Physical Society Outstanding Referee award (2013), the Foundation for Polish Science Master professorship subsidy (2012), the Polish Physical Society Wojciech Rubinowicz Award (2012), and the EU Marie Curie Fellowship (2008).
In addition, Prof. Arkadiusz Wójs is chairman of scientific committees of major conferences (Congress of Polish Physicists 2017, Jaszowiec 2019), member of editorial committees of journals (Condensed Matter, Progress of Physics), reviewer in competitions for grants and awards (domestic and foreign), reviewer of leading scientific journals (including Science, Nature).
Prof. Arkadiusz Wójs balances his academic pursuits with personal interests, including being a father to high school student Natalia and a dog owner to Bourbon. In his leisure time, he enjoys playing tennis and reading. His curiosity extends to exploring the intricate connections between science, art, and the human mind.
